Job Summary
A leading marine terminal in Oakland, CA is seeking a skilled and driven Director of Maintenance and Engineering to lead its maintenance and engineering functions. This leadership position is responsible for the reliability, safety, and performance of all terminal facilities and equipment.

You will oversee maintenance operations, capital planning, vendor and contractor management, compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and the supervision of a technical team in a 24/7 operational environment. Your leadership will help drive efficiency, equipment uptime, and continuous improvement across all areas of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Budgeting

  • Develop and execute maintenance and engineering strategies aligned with operational goals.

  • Lead budgeting and capital expenditure planning to support long-term performance.

  • Stay current with emerging technology and recommend upgrades to maintain a competitive edge.

Team Leadership

  • Hire, train, and lead maintenance and engineering personnel.

  • Foster a high-performing team environment focused on safety, accountability, and collaboration.

Maintenance Operations

  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance of all systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and specialized cargo-handling equipment.

  • Ensure high operational availability of cranes, yard equipment, and automated systems.

Vendor & Contract Management

  • Manage relationships with outside vendors and contractors for maintenance and repair services.

  • Ensure contract compliance, quality performance, and alignment with operational needs.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Promote a culture of safety across maintenance operations and throughout the terminal.

Performance & Process Improvement

  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify and implement improvement opportunities.

  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to address recurring issues.

Inventory & Procurement

  • Manage inventory of critical parts and supplies with a focus on cost control and availability.

  • Negotiate with vendors to ensure quality, pricing, and timely delivery.

Cross-Functional Communication

  • Work closely with terminal leadership, operations, and labor partners to ensure smooth, efficient processes and communication across departments.

Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field (required)

  • Professional Engineering Certification (preferred)

  • Additional training in asset management or industrial maintenance a plus

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role in maintenance or engineering

  • Minimum 2 years of technical experience with marine, port, or industrial equipment

  • Experience managing automated container handling systems (e.g., automated stacking cranes, auto straddle carriers) is a strong plus

  • Familiarity with labor relations, regulatory compliance, and union environments

  • Experience in a 24/7 operations setting preferred

Skills:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of PLC, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-pressure environment

  • Proven ability to manage teams, budgets, and multiple priorities effectively

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work in both office and outdoor terminal environments, including equipment, vessels, and yard areas

  • Exposure to weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, and vibration

  • Physical mobility required for inspections and facility walk-throughs
