Job Summary
A leading marine terminal in Oakland, CA is seeking a Director of Operations to oversee and lead terminal operations in support of company-wide objectives. This position plays a critical leadership role, managing day-to-day operations while driving performance, safety, and efficiency.
The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of terminal operating systems, vessel and yard operations, and labor management, along with a demonstrated ability to make timely, strategic decisions in a fast-paced, unionized environment.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead and direct the terminal operations management team to achieve organizational goals.
-
Prepare and manage annual operations budgets.
-
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to evaluate operational performance.
-
Develop and implement operational procedures and controls that support efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance.
-
Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement innovative solutions to increase operational effectiveness.

Ensure smooth coordination of vessel arrivals, stevedoring, cargo availability, labor allocation, and berth utilization.
-
Act as a subject matter expert for terminal operations, contributing to strategic decision-making and operational planning.

Communicate clearly and effectively with labor, staff, vendors, and customers to maintain high levels of performance and service.

Foster a strong team culture that emphasizes accountability, continuous improvement, and a safe work environment.

Report directly to the Vice President & General Manager and take on additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marine Transportation, Operations Management, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
Experience:
-
Proven experience managing operations in a marine terminal, port, logistics, or transportation setting
-
Experience working with union labor and understanding of related contracts
-
Familiarity with cargo stowage, vessel planning, and stability (strongly preferred)

Knowledge of marine terminal safety standards and regulatory requirements

Experience with terminal operating systems and operational planning tools

Strong leadership and team management capabilities

Analytical problem-solving skills and sound judgment under pressure

Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

Ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize in a high-demand environment
